When Do Furano's Lavender Fields Bloom? Bloom Stages, the July Peak and How to Visit Without Harming the Farms
This guide is for visitors who want to see the lavender around Furano. It explains when the different kinds of lavender bloom, how the local bloom reports work, how to get to the fields without a car, and how to visit without damaging farmland.
We used pages from the Furano Tourism Association, Nakafurano Town, the Nakafurano Tourism Association, JR Hokkaido, Furano Bus, the Furano City winery and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). All were read on 2026-10-04. Bloom dates move with the weather each year, so treat the dates here as a guide.
When lavender blooms around Furano
The Furano Tourism Association gives this pattern. Early varieties start to bloom in late June. The peak is from mid to late July. Later varieties can still be seen into early August.
The association adds that most lavender is cut in August to prepare the plants for the next year. So an August visit may find many fields already cut.
The best timing depends on where you go. The association notes that lavender on higher ground in the Rokugo district blooms later than in the town, and can be seen into early August.
The main varieties, from early to late
The association names four main kinds of lavender grown around Furano:
- Yotei: an early bloomer, with a reddish tint compared with the others, especially in bud.
- Okamurasaki: blooms in the middle of the season, with standard light purple flowers. It has the largest planted area in Furano and peaks in mid-July.
- Hanamoiwa: white to light purple buds, with a fresher scent.
- Dark Purple Early Blooming No. 3: dark purple even in bud. It was bred from a variant of Yotei.
Reading the bloom reports
The association uses a bloom indicator from 0 to 10. Zero means no flowers. Three means pale purple buds. Five means about half the buds are open. Seven means nearly full bloom, and 10 means full bloom.
Nakafurano Town, next to Furano on Route 237, publishes a similar index each summer. It covers the Hokuseiyama Lavender Garden and the Nakafurano Flower Park. Its 2025 reports give a good picture of a real season:
- Okamurasaki at Hokuseiyama: 1 on 19 June, 5 on 4 July, 7 on 9 July, and 10 on 17 and 24 July. Cutting then began.
- Dark purple early variety at Hokuseiyama: 3 on 19 June, 7 on 4 July, and 10 from 9 July to 24 July.
- Lavandin at Hokuseiyama: a later type. It was 3 on 9 July, 5 on 17 July, and 10 from 24 July to 6 August.
Before you book, check the current year's reports. The Furano Tourism Association and Nakafurano Town both post them during the season.
Other flowers through the season
Lavender is only part of the flower year. The association's flower calendar runs like this:
- May: lupines and tulips.
- June: blue salvia and poppies.
- Late June to July: lavender.
- August: sunflowers and cosmos.
- September to October: yellow mustard and dahlias.
Route 237 links Biei, Kamifurano, Nakafurano, Furano, Minamifurano and Shimukappu. Because so many flower gardens lie along it, the association says it is called the "Hanabito Kaido", or flower road.
Where to see lavender
The association's lavender page lists several places in and around Furano. One of them is the Furano Winery. Its own site says it is a winery run by Furano City.
The association's FAQ also lists flower gardens and farms in Kamifurano, Nakafurano, Furano and Minamifurano. Some are private businesses. We do not name private businesses in our guides, so check the association's list for details.
In Nakafurano, the town's two bloom report sites, Hokuseiyama and the Flower Park, are good starting points. In 2026 the town set its 43rd Nakafurano Lavender Festival and fireworks for 1 August at those two places.
The town said there would be traffic controls on festival day. It also said there is no parking near the venue and suggested coming without a car.
Getting there in summer
- From Sapporo: the Furano Lavender Express runs direct to Furano in about two hours. JR Hokkaido lists its 2026 dates as June to September. All seats are reserved.
- From Furano to Nakafurano: the association gives about 10 minutes on the JR Furano Line, or 12 minutes on the Furano Bus Lavender-go.
- Furano Biei Norokko Train: this summer-only train stops at Lavender Field Station, a stop that only opens in summer. JR Hokkaido has said the train ends its service in fiscal 2026.
If you drive, plan for traffic. The association says roads from Sapporo and around Furano can be very busy in the lavender season.
Nakafurano Town charged for its town car park at North 15 in the 2026 season, from 13 June to 23 August. It cost 500 yen per car per visit and took cashless payment only.
Respect the farms
The fields around Furano are working farmland. The Nakafurano Tourism Association says that more visitors have been stepping into fields to take photos. This can contaminate the soil and seriously damage crops.
Its advice is to "step back". Stay out of the fields and frame the sky, clouds and horizon instead. Nakafurano Town's own page adds that farmland is private land and is off-limits.
The same applies to sunflowers. The Furano Tourism Association says farms in Furano grow sunflowers as fertiliser for their fields, not for sightseeing. Enjoy them from the road without disturbing the farmers.
What to wear
JMA's 1991 to 2020 averages for Furano show a July average of 20.6 degrees C. The average daily high is 26.2 degrees and the average daily low is 16.0 degrees.
The association says Furano lies in a basin, so summer days can be hot while mornings and evenings turn cool. It suggests bringing a long-sleeved cardigan or fleece.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Bloom dates for 2027. Nobody can know them yet, and they change with the weather.
- Opening hours, entry rules and prices for individual lavender fields.
- Whether the Furano Winery's lavender field is lit up at night in July in recent years. We only found this on the association's page, without a year.
- Furano Lavender Express dates for 2027, and what will replace the Norokko Train.
- Whether the town car park fee will apply in 2027.
